Origin of Koi Sanke

The Sanke koi line began to be bred in the early 20th century, some documents say that the first Sanke carp was raised in 1915 by Mr. Kawakami (Toranzo). The time of the appearance of the koi sanke breed is relatively early, it is considered one of the Japanese koi fish breeds with a long history.

Characteristics of Koi Sanke Fish

Sanke is a type of koi fish with a characteristic white background covered with red and black patterns. It is often said that a high-quality Sanke model starts with a great Kohaku model, for which black is a special addition. Sanke Koi fish is one of Japan's three most common koi classifications, collectively known as Gosanke. White is the primary color on Sanke, starting at the nose and continuing to the tail, including the fins. The red color on Sanke, also known as hi or beni, appears to be large patches. Meanwhile, black (sumi) is the rarest color on Sanke.

Generally, Sanke will have dark spots, or sumi marks, that are relatively small when compared to prominent beni patches. Sumi can be considered accent colors, while beni and white are the primary colors on Sanke. All motifs on this Koi fish should be on the white back. The motifs extend along the entire length of the koi, not so much on the sides to achieve symmetry. The main difference between Sanke and Showa koi is that Sanke koi have a base color of white, while Showa koi are black. Koi Sanke carp has a white pattern, starting from the nose and ending at the tail, without any discoloration. Red patches will stand out and be larger, while black patches will resemble spots more and are much smaller than red.

Difference Between Sanke and Showa Koi

Sanke and Showa both own 3 colors red, white, and black, so many people are confused. The distinct characteristics below will help you distinguish these two types of Koi:

The main difference between Sanke and Showa koi is that the Sanke koi has a white background color with red patterns that will be more prominent and larger, while black patches will be much more like spots and smaller than red, while Showa koi has a black background with white patches mixed with red.

Difference Between Koi Showa and Koi Sanke

Another feature that distinguishes Sanke from Showa is the sumi layer on top. While Sanke will only have patches of red on top of a white background, Showa will always have a large amount of black covering on top. In addition, the fins are also an easily distinguishable part of Sanke and Showa - for Sanke's fins there may or may not be black spots, but with Showa the fins must have black spots (as shown).
